Dating from roughly 1885 to 1915, the 364 paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs on view demonstrate the pervasive and diverse role of photography in the work and working processes of these significant artists."

Pompeii Forum Project Photographic Archive - "During June of 1995 archaeological photographer Aaron Levin used a large format camera (4"x5" negatives) to create archival quality black-and-white photographs of the buildings in the forum. His work concentrates mainly on the east side of the forum in order to fully document the Macellum, the Imperial Cult Building, the Sanctuary of the Genius of Augustus, and the Eumachia Building."

Photography: Processes, Conservation, and Preservation - With text and images, and "The exhibition includes thirty-five works by some of the most revered names in photography, ranging from the superbly preserved to the unfortunately time-worn, with before-and-after treatment documentation, microscopic views, and examples of current methods for examination, analysis, preservation, and treatment." [Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC]

The Nostaligia for Atlantis - "Photography has entered the era of hybrid, analogue-digital forms, following the era of documentary and objective images. The hunt for the ghost of reality - the realistic illusion of utopia - begins through the use of computers, posing issues of identity. Globalization and the flood of images and information surrounding us lead to the additional experience of an artificial reality that often becomes more realistic than reality itself. 'The Nostalgia for Atlantis' takes the form of an imaginary photographic exploration of Atlantis as if made from satelite."

Colophon Page - [Modern Illustrated Fine Press Books] - "Colophon Page offers a home on the Internet to the community of collectors, dealers and lovers of modern illustrated and fine press books. A comprehensive data base of books for sale in the Dealers Marketplace is supported by a sophisticated Search function and makes available a full range of transaction options . . . . "

Atlas Magazine - "Remember folks, Atlas is built one molecule at a time"; this is a long and difficult process, our staff is hard at work crafting the best possible bang for no money. So remember, be patient, come back often and most importantly, don't forget: "Atlas is foie gras for your bandwidth."

A NOTE ON THE IMPRESSION:

Narratives were finely etched in stone --agate, or jet, or faience some 2000 years BC. The metal of armor of the Early and Middle Ages was etched as was the harness and the shield embroidered with symbols, signs, and narratives. Did the Eskimos create symbols before they carved narratives or delineated descriptive images?

Were impressions collected, etched or carved before images or pictures were drawn or painted?

- - - - -
Of happenstance, an ancient leaf may have been cast in stone. Impressions may be held in sand or clay. With deliberation images are transferred through light-sensitive papers, with the transfer of light through crystals, through chemical response . . . .

An impression may be no more than a logo or chat --sometimes a story or poem --the suggestion of cause --the impolication of an answer . . . some images providing reason for reflection time and again --some prints a refuge or distance or objectivity or breadth. An agreeable design or form incorporated for interior decoration may embrace a space or our activities --deflect them, transform experience.

A Fossil, a Record or Memorial . . . an Accounting . . . . a Narrative . . . . a Definition or a Description or the Seal. The impression may be a Suggestion. The impression may keep --keepsake. thought, Hope, Belief,

The duplication of imagery enhances the opportunity to realize diverse solutions. The visual impression that is exchanged in a note carries the message much like the imprint of a smile that may resonate or last. Fluid exchanges may evolve around thoughts of flexibility, for nourishment --and for space, for rest. This print does not have to be tough, or to teach . . . .

Print processes develop what degrees of refinement, depth, range in tone, style, support, or spark? The avenues in the graphic arts and print media take a predominant role in the visual facet of the human language and continue the development and contribution to the fuller language or dialogue in being here --or there.

QUOTE: "If the hand did not run as quickly, it would be behind the thought; if the improvisation were less sudden, the life brought across would be less; if the work were more hesitant or less sizeable, the work would become impersonal . . . . " [In lines consecrated to Rubens and written in 1876, Eugène Fromentin, in his book 'Old Masters']

The Work Featured Above: SCI-Arc Fall 1995 Lecture Series Poster by Tom Bonauro - "Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Los Angeles, has commissioned some of the most innovative graphic design in the country. This exhibition highlights approximately two dozen examples of SCI-Arc's graphics from SFMOMA's permanent collection, including posters, lecture announcements, brochures and electronic materials, illustrating the active relationship between architectural and graphic experimentation.."
