Strophe






In the ancient theatre, that part of a song, or dance, around the altar which was performed by turning from the right to the left. It was succeeded by the antistrophe, in a contrary direction. Hence, in ancient lyric poetry, the former of two stanzas was called the strophe and the latter the antistrophe. [Elson, Louis C.
