Yaacov Agam

Agam's Illusions
1972

"What is art? In my opinion, it musts rival God." Yaacov Agam is the ambitioius, forty-four-year-old son of a rabbi. A retrospective of his works at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris covers almost twenty years of activity, from the first works to his current Metamorphoses. Since his arrival in Paris in 1951, Agam has continually used the most modern artistic techniques. There is, for example, his recent oil on aluminum entitled Dual Metamorphosis III, completed in three years. The work seems to change, depending where one stands in relation to it. These "plastic themes," as the artist calls the seeming movements, present an ever-changing view to the spectator, who thus participates in the artistic creation.
