Argus

A giant surnamed Panoptes [he who sees all]. He possessed one-hundred eyes, had astounding strength, and performed various feats among which was the slaying of the wild bull that was damaging the crops of Arcadia and the Echidna. Hera charged him with watching over Io whom she had changed into a heifer. But Hermes slew him after putting him to sleep with the magic sound of his flute. In his remembrance, Hera placed his hundred eyes in the tail of her favourite bird the peacock. [p. 82]
